What Is A Urinary Fistula?

NightingaleA fistula is an abnormal connection between two organs. Specifically, with urinary incontinence fistulas, there is a continual leakage of urine. Causes include surgical trauma, pelvic cancer, pelvic radiation therapy, and obstetric trauma.

Incontinence products can help those suffering from urinary fistulas until corrective surgery can be performed. Click on the links below to check out our full range of incontinence products:

In developing countries, the most common and devastating type of fistulas are caused by obstetric trauma. Women, and even girls, who have little or no access to medical care during childbirth can develop obstetric fistulas. They become societal outcasts, rejected by their families, with little hope of education and self-sufficiency through work.

As you prepare for the season of giving, please remember that even a small a gift can enable women and children in developing countries to participate in their communities, have meaningful work, a means to improve their lives, and provide for their families.

For more information on how you can help, go to: The Fistula Foundation.

Survivor: Don't Vote Yourself Off The Island

You're active. You want to stay active. Something just keeps getting in your way: incontinence. With a little pre-planning, it's not too hard to make sure you get to do all the things you want to do, and more.

Putting Together A Survivor Bag:

Start by getting yourself a small bag, such as a drawstring backpack or a tote. A drawstring backpack might be more comfortable for you men among us. They're lightweight, waterproof, and very sporty looking. You can even jazz them up a little by choosing your favorite color, favorite sports team logo, or there's the always stylish basic black.

Here's what to put in it:

A roll of odor-absorbing plastic bags, like these. These will help you dispose of your used undergarment discreetly.

Wipes - PacMed Supply Salem carries a variety of personal wipes, including fragrance-free, in a variety of sizes to fit your activity.

Two extra disposables - PacMed Supply also carries a variety of disposables that fit your life and lifestyle, including Nightengale products, underpads, and briefs. Whatever you need to make you feel comfortable going out, we can help.

With PacMed Supply, you can also call ahead with the products you want, and they will have your Survivor Pack products waiting for you to pick up when you need them.

An extra pair of pants you can roll up, military-style, that will fit in your bag. It's a good idea to carry a pair that are the same color you are wearing to your event, whenever possible, for two reasons: you will feel  more comfortable, and people likely won't notice if you had to change.

Keep a fully packed, ready-to-go Survivor Bag in your car, and keep one in your house to grab and go whenever you need to be out and about.

By doing a little planning ahead, there's no reason to fear the sneeze. If an accident happens, you're ready: you can fix it and keep going.

#1 Thing Senior Women May Find Sexy

58065As we get older, our priorities change. What used to be sexy may still be sexy, but we may let some things go.  We may also have some additional items on the list in no order:

  • Ability to sit in the same room without saying a word, yet enjoying each other.
  • Not having to say, "don't mention this to anyone" because they already won't because they know it would embarrass you.
  • A big hug from behind.
  • A man who sneaks 'sexy eyes' at you in a crowded room making sure no one else sees.
  • A clean kitchen in the morning and you didn't do it the night before, and coffee maker loaded.
  • Coming to your defense or bragging about your accomplishments.
  • Fixing stuff without being asked or having to put it on a 'honey-do' list.
  • Still opening all doors on dates or even on errands.
  • Teasing with love, and you always know there's no malice - just playfulness.
  • Sharing an inside joke and holding back the snickers.
  • Showing off integrity, quietly, because it's just engrained in him.
  • Always counting on his word.
  • A man that can cook and plate a meal beautifully without swearing or destroying the kitchen and then cleans up.

The Movie Reel: Mixing Movies and Politics

From time to time we'll catch something on AMC that is preceded by a "News Reel."  My children find these fascinating and can't believe that these were a popular item before movies.  I explained that it was before the Internet and television in many cases.  They just laugh that there was actually a time before television. We were recently watching Disney's, "Bedknobs and Broomsticks."  Everything they first learned about the Nazi invasion of Europe they learned here.  Inidiana Jones was another movie that gave them another glimpse into that time.

Pacific Medical Supply Salem serves a wide range of ages.  We have our young customers who may need mobility and incontinence products, wound care and daily health aids.  We also serve people into their 90s that very much remember these news reels as their window into the world beyond the United States.

The_Nazis_StrikeNewsreels have long since been supplanted by television news, but filmmakers never stopped making advocacy pieces. When director Frank Capra saw Leni Riefenstahl’s notorious pro-Nazi documentary Triumph of the Will, he wrote, “Satan himself couldn’t have devised a more blood-chilling super-spectacle.” Capra responded with Why We Fight, a seven-part, Oscar-winning documentary that put the government’s objectives into terms moviegoers could understand.

Our Baby Boomers may remember more current films that tackled political issues. To some extent all films are political, because all films have a point of view. Movies that deal with perceived injustices—in Spielberg’s case, The Sugarland Express and Amistad—are on some level criticizing a system that allows them to occur. Even Spielberg’s mass-oriented adventures, like the Indiana Jones series, express a points-of-view: Jones, on the surface apolitical, is drawn into battling tyrannical regimes that threaten the American way of life.

On the other hand, setting out with the goal of making political points through film almost never succeeds, as the graveyard of recent Iraq war-related movies shows. A film has to capture the zeitgeist, it has to deliver a message that moviegoers are ready to accept, in order to have an impact of the culture. When it works, as in the phenomenal box-office results for titles as disparate as Iron Man and Avatar, it doesn’t even matter whether the films have artistic merit.

We can't live our lives like Google runs their business

If you think about it, running your life is sort of like running a business. There are budgets, tasks, deadlines, entertainment, accounting practices, vacation time and healthcare.  Ah, to be like Google where we had no business plan and just roll with it each day with each new trend - that would be the life!  It's just not reality.

Reading this article on FastCompany made me think abou this topic:

Google's Business Strategy: Have No Business Strategy

Serial innovators like Google give employees time to explore ideas -- even though some of those ideas turn into massive failures, writes Tim Harford in Adapt: Why Success Always Starts with Failure.

[This is the second in a three-part series of excerpts from Tim Harford's new book. The first excerpt was "Why Do We Hold Fast To Losing Strategies?"]

You can also read the rest of this post to get some helpful tips from someone who knows what it's like to care for an aging parent.

Getting your senior parents into current technology

37033923_25 Some 65+ folks run to new technology and gadgets; others fear it, deplore it, loathe it - mainly out of fear of failure trying to use it.  The frustraton, the cost, the worry about private information are all factors. You know it's out there - everywhere - they are looking for your private information to use it against you.  These wise people read the paper - in their hands at the breakfast table after fetching it from the driveway or paper box.  This is what they have derived from what they read.

You live for technology, or should I say, you require technology in your hour-to-hour day.  It's difficult to imagine why anyone would not want to use it to improve their knowledge, ability to communicate and stay current on all events around the world.  Here we have the two sides.

If you are a caregiver, or care for your parent from afar, you want to do your best for them and make it as painless as possible for yourself.  Many of us just cram it down their throats, "Here Mom, I bought this for you. It's a phone and camera in one!" She pales and steps back.  She didn't ask for this. Why are you making her have this... this... thing?

One way to help them overcome the fear is to get them the simplest device that YOU know how to set up for them.  Do not even consider this type of gift for an older person without first taking the time to load it up with what is most helpful and removing what they won't need.

Urinary Incontinence In Children

In the United States, at least 13 million people have problems holding urine until they can get to a toilet. This loss of urinary control is called "urinary incontinence" or just "incontinence." Although it affects many young people, it usually disappears naturally over time, which suggests that incontinence, for some people, may be a normal part of growing up.  Want to read more?  Read the rest of the article at www.kidsneeds.com .

It's Been Easy or Grandad Can't Tie His Shoes

My friend overheard this conversation today: (woman) "How can you be 64 years old, a college graduate and business owner and NOT know how to tie your shoes?" (man) It's been easy. 63 years of slip-ons or Velcro."

Can you relate?  Velcro is surely on of the finest inventions of our time.  It's on everything!  Tent flaps, shoes, jackets and yes, on Adult Diapers.  Need Incontinence Supplies?  Call Pacific Medical Supply.  We carry pads, adult diapers, ointments and more.

Leaky Lucy's Leaking Is The Least Of Her Worries

Leaky Lucy knows she leaks.
When it happens, she just freaks.
She is not one to dispair,
She dons disposable underwear.

But what's this she reads?
This news is NOT what she needs.
A new study reports
She might poop in her shorts!

Thank goodness for PacMed,
She'll keep those diapers instead.

Seriously.  Just what a woman with incontinence issues wants to hear.  A study has linked poor bowel control to incontinence issues.

"NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - As many as one in five adult women may suffer from loss of bowel control, according to a new study from Australia.or bowel control, known as fecal incontinence. Overall, the chance of being incontinent generally increased with age."
